Women's Soccer Completes Successful Spring Season

April 21, 2008

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University Women's Soccer team recently completed its Spring 2008 schedule over the weekend and finished the slate with an overall 2-1-2 mark.

The were able to get convincing wins in their first two matches at home two weeks ago, as the Explorers downed Saint Joseph's, 5-1, and Lehigh, 3-0.

Last week, they played a pair of Big East schools and tied the perennial Top 25 teams Villanova, 2-2, Wednesday; and Rutgers, 1-1, Sunday; but suffered a loss at Delaware, Friday.

"Although there is always room for additional growth, we gained an enormous amount of confidence by not only competing closely with two of the premier Big East teams, but also realizing that we now have the potential to have the run of play with those programs," said Head Coach Paul Royal.

The Explorers scored 12 goals in the five matches, as Melanie Gamble led the team with four of them. Sara Copare (3) and Alex Conley (2) each had multiple goals in the spring, while Jen Broeze and Dana Giordano each had one, as did Kristin Hextall, who played in two of the games.

"Our staff thought it was a tremendous spring season...arguably the best I've experienced in my 10 years of collegiate coaching," said Royal. "The girls showed a lot of resilience in some very competitive matches.

"Both my assistants, the weight staff and the training room did an outstanding job of preparing them for the rigors of our demanding spring curriculum. I thought they were all invaluable in helping us get one step closer to our spring team goals and ultimately competing for an Atlantic 10 Championship."

Splitting time in net for La Salle was Melissa Sanger and Amy Grant, who each played a total of 2.5 games, and "made significant strides and had a consistent impact in each game that helped pace the way for the successful spring."

"I truly believe that we have reached a new high as it relates to our player's attitude and commitment during this spring season. Each individual in some way or another has reached levels that I didn't think would be possible in such a short period of time.

"We are incredibly excited about seeing our girls continued progression and are very optimistic about the future success of the program."

La Salle will open the 2008 season on Friday, August 29 when they host Delaware State at 7 PM at McCarthy Stadium.
