Atlantic 10 Honors Kennedy for Effort on Sunday; Big 5 Follows Suit

May 5, 2008

PHILADELPHIA - The Atlantic 10 Conference has announced its weekly honors, and picking up a Co-Rookie of the Week nod was La Salle starting pitcher Sean Kennedy, his first honor of the season. Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball followed suit with its announcement on Tuesday as Kennedy gets the Pitcher of the Week honor.

The southpaw threw his first collegiate complete game in 2008 as he helped the Explorers to a 6-1 victory in the first game of their A-10 series at Saint Bonaventure.

After facing a bases loaded jam with one out in the first, he got the first of three double play balls in the game. He allowed his only extra base hit in the second - the only base runner to score - and scattered just three hits over the last six innings.

Kennedy surrendered eight hits over nine innings and walked three, while striking out one to win his third straight decision - 3-2 overall. He improved to 2-0 in A-10 games only, with a 3.00 ERA in 18 innings pitched (two starts, three appearances).

With Kennedy's complete game, La Salle pitchers have now thrown seven in 2008, the most since the 2000 season, when the Explorers had eight.

La Salle has now been honored with three A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in 2008 - as classmate Kevin Fuqua earned a pair on March 10 and April 21 - marking the first time two different Explorers have earned the honor in the same season.

Kennedy shared the A-10 honor this week with Charlotte's Cory Tilton, who went 6-for-13 last week with five runs scored and five RBI.

For Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball, this is the fourth time this season a La Salle pitcher has picked up the honor as Fuqua earned it March 11 and April 8, and Drew Gerhart took it last week.

The Player of the Week in the Big 5 was Temple's Stan Orzechowski, who batted .526 (10-for-19) with five RBI and eight runs scored.
