Charles Torpey returns to La Salle University for his 15th season, guiding both the men's and women's cross country teams as well as the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. During his 32-year coaching career, Torpey has molded numerous nationally-ranked athletes and three Olympians. In 2006-07 standout athlete Sean Quigley earned NCAA All-American status three times- a feat never before accomplished by a La Salle runner. "Coach Torpey is not a good coach, he is an outstanding coach. He is someone who knows how to build and maintain a program at a very high level. He is dedicated, honest and trustworthy- and young men and women sense this, "La Salle Director of Athletics Dr. Thomas Brennan. In the past ten years, Explorers squads have been nationally ranked in the men's 4x800 relay, the 4x1500 relay, and the Mile relay, and the women have also been ranked in the 4x800 and 4x1500. In 2006 the Women's Cross Country team was ranked as high as 32nd in the nation, while the men's team has received national rankings numerous times over the past seven years. Striving for excellence on the track as well as off, Torpey has coached 24 USTFCCCA Academic All-Americans and his women have earned Academic All-America status as a team for ten years. 2006-07 was no different as Women's Cross Country and Women's Outdoor Track earned this accolade. At Maryland: Head coach from 1981-88 at the University of Maryland. The Terrapins had one of the finer programs in the East over this period of time. The indoor and outdoor track teams finished in the top five at the IC4A's eight times and the cross country team was nationally ranked three times. During his tenure there, Torpey had 17 track and cross country All-Americans, as well as 20 Atlantic Coast All-Conference cross country runners and 13 ACC track champions. Miscellaneous: Before joining La Salle, Torpey served as head track coach at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, Maryland and coached his boy's team to the 1992 Maryland 4A state track title.Besides his team's accomplishments, Torpey has also coached a U.S. junior cross country champion and a USTAF women's champion in the 5000m, respectively. In 1990, Torpey was the head women's coach for the U.S. women's team competing at the Ekiden World Championships in Chiba, Japan. Personal: Torpey- a New Milford, Connecticut native is a graduate of Keene State College. He resides in Schwenksville, PA with his wife Janice and sons Christopher, Brian and daughter Jenna. |
