PHILADELPHIA - La Salle University Men's and Women's Rowing competed in the Bergen Cup this past weekend on the Schuylkill River. The battle of the Philadelphia schools included Temple, St. Joseph's, Drexel and for the first time, Philadelphia University.

The 2000-meter race had floating starts due to the recent rain and La Salle was entered in five categories: men's and women's Varsity 8, men's and women's Varsity 4 and women's Freshman 4.

The first race of the day was the women's Freshman 4, containing Desiree Cappuccio, Meg Brown, Karen Mahoney, Jacquelyn Smolarek and Gillian Powell. They stopped the clock in 8:01.1 to take first, finishing ahead of crews from Temple and Philadelphia.

In the second race, the women's Varsity 4: consisting of Katie Teevan, Sarah Brown, Rita Brown, Molly Gatch and Patrice Girard, finished fourth, while Drexel won the event in a time of 7:44.19.

Next to row was the men's Varsity 4, containing Lauren Corkery, Adam Sutkus, Max Orenstein, Joe Scibetta, and Brett Fair. They took second, crossing the line in 7:21.75, behing only first-place Temple, who won with a time of 7:01.2.

The women's Varsity 8, consisting of Nicole Caronia, Aimee Nichols, Michelle Kukawski, Becky Mahney, Shauna Goetz, Kristin Weimar, Dani Fralen, Michelle DeLong and Sadie Mazur was the next crew out.

Even though they came in fourth out of four boats, they closed the time gap between their crew and Temple (6:22.13) by five seconds, rather then the 30 seconds at Knecht Cup. They finished in 6:27.14, while St. Joseph's took first in 6:07.35.

The last race of the day was the men's Varsity 8, containing Francesca Cupo, Justin Wiener, Joe Hughes, Matt Wiedemer, Matt Stoltz, James Keough, Blaine Kneeshaw, Ryan Fair and Zack Coons. They finished with a time of 5:56.1 good for third, while Drexel won in a time of 5:43.1. Temple was disqualified due to passing from lane 3 to lane 4 arch.

La Salle will compete in one more event this season, the Dad Vails on the Schuylkill River on May 11 and 12.
